Palmerston Library, Palmerston NT

The new Palmerston Library replaced a facility in the Council Chambers that had been outgrown and outmoded. Although originally considered as an extension to the Council Chambers on the fringe of the CBD, the Council joined with the NT Government to use the library and a recreation centre as catalysts for the rejuvenation and refocussing of the Palmerston CBD.

Palmerston is one of Australia's fasted growing centres, with a young population demanding up-to-date and approachable facilities. The Council was aware that the design philosophy for libraries had moved on from quiet, stuffy book repositories to dynamic, multi-media meeting places for cultural enrichment. Accordingly, the library was required to reflect current trends in library management, flexibility for future changes, and a welcoming relaxed atmosphere.
