Goyder Square Precinct

Frances Mall was the first of the pedestrian elements, while the original ‘Goyder Hill’ physically and visually disconnected the area from the rest of the CBD. Palmerston’s business area developed in response to demand for retail and other facilities, but since the scale and vehicle access requirements did not conform with the original concept, the town effectively ‘turned its back’ on the Superblock. With the exception of the successful Friday markets, the area became a focus for antisocial activities while businesses facing the mall struggled for viability.

The NT Government and Palmerston City Council agreed to commit funds to needed community facilities, and to using the project to reintegrate and enliven the Palmerston CBD. Darwin’s MKEA Architects, in association with Hassell (Qld) were engaged by the project group for community consultation and urban planning, and for the design and documentation of the building elements.
